‘Jawan’ – Review (The Massy Film Everyone Wanted)

Shah Rukh Khan is back with his new and most craziest film ever, and after the amazing success of his recent film Pathaan, Jawan might even surpass that.

Directed by Atlee, the action thriller film follows a Jailer leading a group of female vigilantes to right the wrongs done by the system and one particular weapons dealer who is behind his tragic childhood.

Jawan stars SRK in the lead role with Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Riddhi Dogra, Leher Khan, and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya in supporting roles.

Jawan – The Good

Jawan does many things right, and the biggest accomplishment this film has is its brilliant blend of the star and the character. As we all know Jawan is sort of a collaboration between the South and the Hindi film industry with most of the talent both behind and in front of the camera coming from there and in the center of it all is SRK, arguably India’s biggest and last movie star. Atlee has always been good at shaping mass entertaining characters around the actor who is playing, he has done it before with Vijay in Theri and Mersal, and this time is no different as SRK seems to be larger than life in every frame of Jawan.

The SRK film also has some of the most brilliant and well-choreographed action I have seen in recent times. Every action set piece lands with the audience better than the last and there isn’t a single action scene in which the audience can just relax as every moment of every action scene pulls you closer and closer to the edge of your seat. Another great thing Jawan has is its visual effects and Red Chillies Entertainment’s VFX team should be applauded for their wonderful work for the beautiful imagery in the film.

When it comes to Bollywood masala film acting nobody is better than King Khan and he proves it once again in Jawan. Besides SRK, almost everybody puts forth a commendable performance but the true standouts were Nayanthara for her action scenes, Deepika Padukone for her emotional scenes, and Sanya Malhotra for putting forth an emotional and complex performance.

Jawan – The Bad & The Ugly

Atlee has always had a problem in his filmography that being his overstuffed plot and pointless social messaging that doesn’t make sense in the context of the story. This problem is also a glaring issue in Jawan. The film should have been a straightforward action thriller but it gets bogged down with too many storylines and some nonsensical social issues that never should have been brought up if there wasn’t a discussion to be had about them in the film.

Another problem Jawan faces is its pacing issues, sometimes you will a plotline just starting and you won’t even know when it has reached its conclusion. There are many instances when the emotions of the film and characters change at a moment’s notice leaving the audience with no time to grasp the situation. As with many action films, Jawan also has the romantic relationship issue because without the romantic element, Jawan would have felt a bit more intense and thrilling, and a bit less amateurish.

Jawan – The Conclusion

In conclusion, Jawan has been able to do something that many Hindi films fail to do and that is presenting a massive star with a massy character in a massy film. SRK is always a delight and every supporting does their job commendably. The action is great and visually the film is a feast for the eyes.
